PROFESSOR DR RUSNI HASSAN
Dean of the Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance International Islamic University Malaysia
Prof Dr Rusni Hassan is the Dean of the Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). She is a graduate in LLB (Honours), LLB (Shari’a) (First Class), Master of Comparative Laws (MCL) and has received her PhD in Law as well. Her area of specialisation includes legal, governance and Shari’a aspects of Islamic banking and finance (IsBF). She is an active researcher and expert trainer in IsBF.
As a renowned global industry expert in Islamic banking and finance, she advises on Shari’a compliance aspects and issues, including waqf, cooperative society and Islamic pawnbroking. Her publication includes books on Islamic banking and finance, as well as chapters in books and articles published in local and international journals. She is listed as one of the Top 10 contributors for research in Islamic finance in the Scopus database.
Dr Rusni is very actively involved in the IsBF industry. She was a member of the Shariah Advisory Council Bank Negara Malaysia (SAC) from 2010 to 2016 and also has been a member of the Shari’a Committee for a number of institutions in Malaysia, including, the Association of Islamic Banking Institutions Malaysia (AIBIM) as well as Waqf Al-Nur and Koperasi J-Corp. Internationally, she is on the Shari’a Committee for Housing Development Corporation and Housing Development Financing Corporation, Maldives. Her contribution to Islamic finance in the Maldives has been recognised by the Government of Maldives, when she was awarded the National Recognition for Outstanding Contribution of Females to Develop and Sustain Islamic Finance Industry in the Maldives in 2018.
She is a registered Shari’a Advisor with the Securities Commission Malaysia. As a member of the pro-tem committee and Secretary for both associations, respectively, she was instrumental in the establishment of the Association of Shariah Advisors in Islamic Finance Malaysia (ASAS) and the International Council of Islamic Finance Educators (ICIFE). She is now on the Advisory Council of ASAS and Vice President of ICIFE.
Her works and contribution to Islamic finance have also been recognised internationally as she has been listed on the Most Influential Women in Islamic Finance list since 2013. Her most recent achievements have been to be ranked among the Top 50 Most Influential Women in Islamic Finance 2018; and the Top 10 Most Influential Women in Islamic Business and Finance in 2019, 2020 and 2021 consecutively by Cambridge IFA.
